In the famous prayer of Reinhold Niebuhr, he says, “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference”. We all wish and want to change some things. But the reality is that we cannot change everything we want to. And it seems the chameleon knows this. Realizing that it cannot change the earth, it changes skin color to adapt to the reality. The key word here is adaptation. Adaptation is adjusting to situations in a way that inures to our advantage. When you adapt you lose nothing of worth. It takes wisdom to know how to adapt. The most important change is changing our lives. A wise monk once wrote, “When I was a young man, I wanted to change the world. I found it was difficult to change the world, so I tried to change my nation. When I found I couldn’t change the nation, I began to focus on my town. I couldn’t change the town and as an older man, I tried to change my family. Now, as an old man, I realize the only thing I can change is myself, and suddenly I realize that if long ago I had changed myself, I could have made an impact on my family. My family and I could have made an impact on our town. Their impact could have changed the nation and I could indeed have changed the world. Be changed.
