REMARKS BY H.E., ELDER PROF. CHIGOZIE N. OGBU, OFR, VICE CHANCELLOR, EBONYI STATE UNIVERSITY ON THE OCCASION OF BRIEFING THE CHIEF OF ARMY STAFF ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF “LT GEN TY BURATA INSTITUTE FOR PEACE AND STRATEGIC STUDIES” AT EBONYI STATE UNIVERSITY (EBSU)
I bring you very warm felicitations from our beloved Governor, H.E., engr. Apostle David Nweze Umahi, Fnse, Fnate, who is unavoidably unable to be at this meeting due to current emergencies in the state. I was with him when he called you and booked this appointment which he had planned to attend by himself. He asked me to convey to you, General, his full support for this programme which he sees as one of those excellent opportunities to foster unity and understanding among the citizens of our great country, Nigeria.
General, sir, may I seize this unique opportunity, on behalf of Ebonyi State University, to congratulate you, though belated, on your well-deserved appointment as the Chief of Army Staff. I also wish to congratulate and highly commend you on the contributions of the Army, under your able leadership, to the promotion and maintenance of peace in Nigeria, particularly during the 2019 general elections.
You belief that a well-educated Army is essential for effective military duties in the 21st century. Ebonyi State University shares this view with you and recognizes that all aspects of human life is knowledge driven in the 21st century and beyond. We are very delighted that you are interested in the establishment of an Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies at Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki to offer members of the Armed Forces and other service personnel the opportunity to get higher and relevant education. Our Governor and the State Executive Council have approved that the institute be named “Lt. Gen TY Buratai Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies,” Ebonyi State University in you honour for your selfless service to the nation.
We are here to brief you on the preparations we have made so far towards the establishment of the Institute and to receive your blessing in this effort. Ebonyi State University was established by Law No. 07 of 1999 and currently has a student population of approximately 23,000. We operate multi-campus system. Permits me General to call on the Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies to present a brief on the institute.
