The Honourable Commissioner for Road, Rail and Water Transportation in Anambra State, Hon Uchenna Okafor, has canvassed for enhanced sensitization and media attention on the benefits of riding a Bicycle. The United Nations General Assembly had adopted every June 3, as an official day of awareness about the multiple societal benefits of using the bicycle for transport and leisure. And also, a day to mark the celebration.
The Commissioner who made this known during the event to mark The World Bicycle Day Celebration, held at the premises of Anambra Broadcasting Service Awka, Anambra state, today, observed that the introduction of bicycle as a means of transportation in the state will greatly help in reducing the vehicle traffic gridlocks that is becoming a major challenge in Anambra state. He opined that it is in line with His Excellency, Gov Willie Obiano’s policy on road decongestion.
Hon Okafor, who harped on this years theme ” Cycling For Fitness “, suggested that there was the need for every family to have a bicycle as its health and environmental benefits are enormous.
In their separate remarks, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission, Anambra state, Mr Sunday Ajayi, observed that there are lots of health benefits for cyclists. He said that Bicycle transportation is environmentally friendly, cheap to maintain and should be inculcated into the states’ transport architecture.
In his words, the Managing Director of Anambra State Broadcasting Service, Nze Uche Nworah, expressed his optimism of the Gov Willie Obiano’s intention to key into the Bicycle transport subsector. He pledged to use the states’ media outfit in sensitizing the people of the health benefits of riding a bicycle.
