This was the view of the President of Alaigbo Development Foundation, ADF, Professor Uzodimma Nwala. Prof Nwala was speaking at the presentation ceremony of the book, THE NIGERIAN JANUARY 1966 COUP – Myths And Realities, which took place at the main hall of the Bon Sunshine Hotel in Enugu on Saturday, July 28, 2018.
After Mr. Obi had spoken in appreciation of the efforts of the ADF to produce such a historical book, Prof Nwala hurried over to take the microphone, briefly preventing Mr. Obi from getting back to his seat.
‘’This man standing before you today may be known to you as just former governor of Anambra State. Yes, he did excellently as governor for eight years, we all know that. But there’s much more of him than that. Apart from the fact that this urbane gentleman is humility personified, he has contributed quite hugely to the development and well-being of Alaigbo. He rarely talks about it himself because of his humble nature. But when you’re privileged to come across those sons and daughters of Igbo land he has assisted, you’ll hear marveling tales of this great man.
‘’ADF went to see Chief Innocent Chukwuma , the CEO of Innoson Motors to appreciate his efforts and wish him continued vigour to soar higher in his historical motor-manufacturing breakthrough. But you know what? Innoson told us to forget the accolades we were giving to him…and go to Peter Obi instead. That it was this great man who made Innoson Motors that we see today possible. In Innoson’s words, ‘despite assisting me to set up the company, he ordered vehicles worth N5 billion, paid me upfront…UPFRONT, then we started producing to his orders and delivering to the state government. That is how Innoson survived and is the success you see today. And beyond that he convinced President Jonathan to place another big order for the Federal Government.’’’
While the audience applauded, the professor added, ‘’we got to another big Anambra State importer and he said yet again, ‘help me thank Peter Obi. When my containers were seized by Customs, somebody led me to him. After I explained and he got convinced my goods were legitimate, he went to Abuja to meet with President Jonathan and my goods worth billions were released to me.
‘’When we got to the United States to parley on ways forward for Alaigbo, the voices were unanimous that all ndi Igbo need are just two people like Peter Obi and we will get assuredly to our destination. And they were right – he is exactly who we need in Alaigbo.‘’
Again the audience punctuated the ADF president while Dr. Dozie Ikedife continued to nod in affirmation.
The event which had most respected Igbo sons and daughters expected as guests, had equally a host of special guests including the five governors of Southeast and the six of Southsouth, took off at 10.30 am. Under the chairmanship of the former governor of Imo State HE Admiral Ndubisi Kanu, other special guests included HE Vic Admiral Ebitu Ukiwe(Rtd), Mr. Peter Obi, Prof Ben Nwabueze, Capt Emma Iheanacho, Chief Mbazulike Amaechi, Mr. Frank Nnoli, HRM Igwe Raph Ekpe, HRM Igwe Amb. LOC Agbuzu(Royal Father of the Day) and Her Royal Majesty Obi Igwe Martha Dunukwu(Royal Mother of the Day).
Though some of these guest were represented, all the BOT members led by the Chairman, Dr. Dozie Ikedife were there, including Elder Kalu U. Kalu, Chief Innocent Nwogu, Chief Okey Nwankwo, Prof Bart Nnaji, Prof Goddy Nwosu, Amb Austin Okwu, Princess Alu Ibiam and Bishop Obi Udemezue Onubogu. There were also Prof Elo Amucheazu, Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa, Prof Nath Aniekwu, Hon Marie Okwo and many others, including those in diaspora.
The book presentation itself was a very successful ceremony after the ADF President’s powerful address. And even more powerful was the delightful book review by Professor E. C. Ejiogu.
Dr. Ikedife anchored the unveiling with a powerful slogan. Just like Bishop Onubogu’s opening prayer.
The event was beamed live to internet users via YouTube by Bia Voice International(BVI) Ltd.
The book, The Nigerian January 1966 Coup and Biafra: Myths and Realities, reveals with startling documentary evidence that that Coup was not an IGBO COUP. It equally reveals whose Coup it was, that is, in whose interest the idealistic young army officers from Alaigbo, Yoruba and the Northern regions, staged that Coup.
It’s a must read.
